Why Coach Matt?
About Me
Coming from a background as a national-level swimmer, I’ve now been involved in triathlon for almost 20 years, with more than a decade of triathlon coaching under my belt. I’ve coached on-the-ground at swim squads, triathlon and run clubs, while providing online coaching for athletes of all distances, backgrounds, ages and nationalities.
I am certified as a triathlon coach by IronmanU and British Triathlon, and I'm also a certified swim coach and personal trainer. My athletic highlights include more than 10 full distance triathlons with a sub-9:30 best, an Ultraman, several ultramarathons and a range of podiums at shorter distance races.
Originally a journalist by trade, my triathlon and coaching career developed alongside a corporate career for a Fortune 500 company, leading teams and speaking at large events, all while being a loving father to three exhaustingly lovable kids.
I've also contributed articles and copywriting to aumber
Born in Chester, UK, my career has taken me all around the world but the Netherlands is now well and truly home.
About My Coaching
Over the years, I've coached first-timers to Kona and 70.3 World Championship qualifiers, but my own background gives me a particularly astute insight into age-groupers with a busy personal and professional life who want to achive their personal athletic dreams too.
My approach is based around four S's:
Smart training is Sustainable training: Training smarter means getting the maximum impact from the fewest hours and sessions. Less junk miles means athletes can remain consistent – and consistency is the secret sauce of triathlon.
SAID: Specific Adaptations to Imposed Demands. Or, for those not versed in exercise physiology, making sure that training is specific to the demands of your event.
Soul: While we're chasing improvements and results, endurance sports is also our escape, our meditation, and our social outlet. Sometimes it's important to ignore the plan and do that gravel ride with friends or hit the trails.
I really believe that to achieve success, the coach needs to consider the whole athlete.
Alex J., Age-Group Triathlete and Dad of Two
“Before working with Matt, I was constantly juggling training, work, and family—and feeling like I was falling short on all three. Three years later, I’ve completed two Ironmans, hit 70.3 times I never thought possible, and stayed injury-free. Matt’s coaching isn’t just smart—it’s life-aware. He understands the demands outside of sport and builds training around you, not the other way around.”
Precision Coaching
I coach with Precision Coaching, one of the leading forces in endurance sports, with a 15 year track-record, including being named the No. 1 IRONMAN Team for the UK and EMEA in 2019.
Precision Coaching was founded by Will Usher, a household name within the triathlon industry who has been shortlisted for 220 Triathlon’s Coach of the Year on multiple occasions and appeared in publications such as The Times, The Telegraph, The Mail on Sunday, ITV’s Good Morning Britain and 220 Triathlon, while consulting with brands like HUUB and Speedo. Will is the go-to coach for celebrities tackling the Ironman, such as Gordon Ramsey and motor racing pundit Billy Monger whose attempt to break the Ironman record for a double leg amputee was covered in a BBC documentary.
This means that I can draw on a coaching team that includes Olympic coaches and athletes, medical staff, and age-group medallists with decades of collective experience to help me deliver the very best training and advice that you deserve.
You’ll also get all the benefits of being coached by a Precision Coach, such as a huge range of discounts on HUUB, Wahoo, Specialised, Quintana Too, Precision Fuel and Hydration, TORQ, U perform, CurraNZ and Monkey Socks, to name but a few. You can join weekly sessions on Zwift, RGT and Discord. You’ll be invited to our monthly group calls with coaches, field experts, brands and guest speakers. And you can join our Precision forums and WhatsApp groups.
You’ll also get access to (and discounts for) in-person events like training camps, training days and Pool School. Plus, we’ve identified several races across the UK and Europe to participate as a group, where we can turn a race into a party.
All in all, I’ll still be your coach, your contact, the person you’ll deal with every day. But there will also be a team behind me to give you the very best.
